Repiping is replacing the water supply pipe throughout a home rather than repairing failures one at a time. It is the right call when the pipe material itself has reached the end of its usable life — at which point every individual repair is temporary by definition.
It sounds drastic. In practice it is planned, permitted work with a known cost and a definite end, which is generally preferable to an open-ended run of emergency calls.

When repiping is genuinely the right answer
Polybutylene is the clearest case. Used widely from the late 1970s into the mid 1990s and very common in Florida homes of that era, it degrades internally where chlorinated water contacts it and then fails suddenly. It is usually grey, sometimes blue or black, flexible, with crimped metal or plastic fittings. If your home has it, replacement is a question of when.
Galvanised steel is the second. It rusts from the inside, progressively narrowing until pressure suffers throughout the house and the water runs discoloured. There is no repair for a restriction along the entire length of every pipe.
The third is copper that has begun producing repeat pinhole leaks. One pinhole is a repair. A third pinhole in two years means the copper has thinned generally and you are simply waiting for the next one somewhere else.
If none of those describe your home, you probably do not need a repipe, and we will tell you so.
PEX or copper?
Both are good materials and we install both. PEX is flexible, which means far fewer joints and the ability to route through existing wall cavities with much less demolition. It does not corrode, it tolerates our water chemistry well, and it is generally less expensive to install because it is faster.
Copper is rigid, long proven, and some homeowners simply prefer it. It costs more, takes longer to install, and requires opening more wall to run it. In areas where soil chemistry is aggressive toward copper it is not automatically the more durable choice.

What the job is actually like to live through
A typical single-family repipe takes a few days rather than weeks. We start by planning routes that minimise wall openings, then run new lines, tie in each fixture, pressure test the system, and arrange county inspection.
Water is off during working hours and back on each evening in most cases, so you can normally stay in the house. We will tell you upfront if your specific layout means a longer interruption.
There will be access holes in walls and ceilings — that is unavoidable — but planning routes carefully keeps them few and small. We patch to drywall-ready, and can coordinate finishing and paint if you would rather have one point of contact for the whole thing.
The work is permitted and inspected. That matters at resale: an unpermitted repipe is a problem that surfaces at exactly the wrong moment.
What it costs, and what it is worth
Cost depends on the size of the home, the number of bathrooms, whether it is single or two-storey, slab or crawl space, and how accessible the runs are. We quote after seeing the house, because a number given over the phone is a guess.
Against that, weigh what you are currently spending. Repeat emergency call-outs, water damage repairs, rising insurance exposure and the risk of a failure while you are away all carry real cost. Insurers increasingly ask about polybutylene, and some will not write a policy on a home that still has it.
It is also a genuine selling point. "Whole home repiped, permitted and inspected" removes an objection that would otherwise cost you at negotiation.
